Mobilizing Knowledge for the Adoption of Best Management Practices in Ontario’s Horticulture Sector

Project Summary
The project investigated the role that knowledge translation and transfer (KTT) plays in the adoption of BMPs in Ontario’s horticulture sector, with a focus on Niagara as a case study. The study identified the factors that influence how information about BMPs is accessed, interpreted and adopted (or not) by various knowledge users. It identified and described the major KTT strategies used by BMP researchers and intermediaries to promote the adoption of BMPs. By comparing the knowledge seeking behaviours of knowledge users with the KTT strategies of knowledge producers, new insights and evidence were gained to inform BMP program design, implementation, communication and evaluation.
This project also supported a Master's thesis entitled: Exploring the Role of Knowledge Mobilization in the Adoption of Integrated Pest Management for Grapevine Viruses.
Goals
The overarching goal of the project was to identify and evaluate the barriers to KTT that impede the adoption of BMPs in Ontario's horticulture sector and to recommend KTT strategies and approaches that overcome the barriers.
Funding provided by:
BMPs are knowledge-intensive, research-based innovations. Adoption is linked to effective KTT strategies, creating connections among researchers, intermediaries, and adopters for dissemination and uptake.
